As part of the festival “Iași Opens Its Courtyards,” we embraced the challenge of an ideas competition launched in February 2023, aimed at reactivating the inner courtyards of historic Iași through temporary architectural installations. Our project focused on the courtyard of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, a space rich in cultural and historical symbolism.
The goal of our proposal was twofold: to reclaim a neglected interstitial space and to create a modular, sustainable, flexible, and easily assembled installation—all with the intent of offering a new symbol of urban development and local identity.
Analysing the architectural context and the historical trajectory of the university, we uncovered a profound relationship of interdependence between the space and its function. These values—organic flow and connection—became the core of our concept. The installation thus proposes a visual metaphor of collective evolution: a pathway formed of individual modules, united through mutual support, reflecting the process of shaping a shared identity.
In an irregular, intimate space without a clearly defined orientation, the pavilion becomes an organizing element. It creates a central axis that generates new relationships, tensions, and interactions—between the individual and the group, between past and future, between architecture and community.
